Know Your Massachusetts Personal Injury Lawyer
Working with a large personal injury law firm can be tricky. If you schedule a free consultation, the personal injury lawyer you talk to may not be the one who will represent you if you hire the firm. And the one who files your pleadings and negotiates with the insurance company may not be the one who returns your phone calls.
Lowell personal injury attorney Kevin P. Broderick knows that your relationship with your attorney matters–and that you can’t build trust-based relationships by bouncing from person to person every time you have a question or the firm needs information from you. When you schedule a consultation with The Broderick Law Firm, you consult with Kevin Broderick. And if you hire The Broderick Law Firm, Kevin Broderick is your lawyer.
Here’s what that means for you:
You can count on the same level of service, knowledge, and responsiveness once you become a client that you experienced during your free consultation
- The same attorney is managing all aspects of your case, and will know your case in detail
- If you have to sit for a deposition or appear in court, you’ll be prepared in advance by the same attorney you’ve come to know and trust
Make Sure You Know What You’re Getting in an Attorney
We always encourage people to use their free consultation with our firm (or any personal injury firm) to assess the attorney. Partly, of course, that’s about knowledge and experience. But there’s another important component. You may be working with your lawyer for a long time, especially if your injuries are serious or you are still recovering. You’ll need to have confidence in your personal injury lawyer and feel comfortable asking them questions and letting them know when you don’t understand something. You will likely also have to share some very personal information with them.
Unfortunately, if a firm has a managing partner or an attorney who is really good with closing the deal who spends a lot of their time doing consultations and then handing off the case, you won’t be able to assess any of that during your initial consultation.
Here are some questions you can ask during your free consultation to make sure you know what you’re getting in terms of the lawyer who will represent you and the type of relationship you’ll have with them:
- Will you be the attorney responsible for my case?
- If not, who will, and can I meet them before I make a decision?
- Will you be handling aspects of the case like discovery, depositions and court appearances, or will other lawyers in the firm do that?
- Who will be my point of contact if I have questions or concerns?
Sometimes, the attorney you’re consulting will tell you that everyone in the firm will be up to speed on your case, and whomever you talk to will be able to help. Sometimes, with a small firm, that’s true. For example, if there are just one or two attorneys, a paralegal and a legal secretary, it’s likely that everyone in the office will in some way be involved in working your case.
But what if there are 20 attorneys, or 50, and each has their own paralegal who works only on their cases. Can you really expect everyone at the firm to be personally familiar with every case? More often, what that means is that the firm has a case management system accessible to everyone, so that anyone who answers the phone can pull up your case file. That’s not the same as knowing your case.
What to Do When You Need a Lowell Injury Lawyer
First, do some research. Ask friends and family if they have worked with a personal injury lawyer in the area, and find out who they used and how satisfied they were. Make sure to learn a little about their case, though. An attorney who handled a small slip and fall case may or may not be the right attorney to handle a large truck accident case, for example.
Search for Lowell personal injury lawyers online, and look at the attorney’s bio page, their past case results, and their reviews. No one has better insight into what it’s like to work with a particular lawyer than a client who has relied on them. Then, schedule a free consultation and use it to full advantage–not just to ask about whether you have a case and what type of damages you may be entitled to, but to learn about the lawyer you’d be working with and how the firm operates.
